Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your Homes Air Conditioner

Here in Eastern Iowa, the summers can really be hot and humid. When  the heat comes (and it will) there is no worse feeling than having sweat run down your neck, especially when you are in your home. While most homes in the Cedar Rapids are do have air conditioning, what we find that is many do not operate as efficiently as they could.

It is a good idea to have your air conditioner serviced every spring to ensure that you are not caught off guard when summers heat does show up.

That said, there are a few things you can do to help improve your air conditioners performance.

Tips To Get The Most Out Of Your A/C

Replace Air Filters

When your homes HVAC filter gets dirty, it restricts the air flow. In the summer, this will force your air conditioner to work harder and will impede the circulation of air through the system.

A clogged and dirty filter can also allow dust to be released into the house and irritate allergies and other respiratory issues.

By installing a new filter, your air conditioner doesn’t work as hard and that will decrease electric usage.

Check Your Thermostat Regularly

Make it a habit to check the thermostat regularly. Make sure the system starts, operates and shuts off when the temperature reaches the desired level.

If left unchecked, a faulty or inefficient thermostat can result in higher electric bills and cause the a/c unit itself to malfunction.

Keep The Outside Condenser Clear

Most air conditioning systems have an exterior condenser. This is where heat is exchanged and cycled through to be cooled. When air flow is restricted to it, it will limit the systems cool capacity.

Keep the area around the condenser clear of plants, toys and other obstruction. This will not only allow for better air flow, but will help prevent it from being damaged.

Limit Indoor Heat

You home will heat up quickly if your are baking in the oven or running the clothes dryer. Try to do these things at night, rather than during the heat of the day.

The less heat other appliances generate, the less the air conditioner will need to run to keep your home cool.

Close Blinds and Curtains

The sun beating down on your house can heat it up quickly. When blinds and curtains are closed, they reflect the majority of the sun’s heat.

Once again, the more you can keep the heat out, the better your air conditioner will perform.
